Star Wars Episode VII – A New Hope

So this is it now, it’s going to happen; nothing can stop it so let’s just take a look at it now. JJ Abrams has proven with Star Trek that he can take one of the biggest sci-fi franchises of all time and make it fresh and modern and successful. If he can reinvigorate Star Trek for a whole new generation of fans why can’t he do the same thing with Star Wars? Interestingly Abrams has said that he was never much of a fan of Star Trek but he has always loved Star Wars. So why would anyone be sceptical of Abrams Episode VII? The prequels.  Not too long ago we were in this position before, after years of anticipation Lucas told us there would be new Star Wars flicks, and the fan boys everywhere exploded with excitement, how could it possibly go wrong? Then those movies turned out to be the prequels. So what had changed between the time of the original trilogy and the prequels, simply put Lucas had amassed too much power. Back in the original trilogy the movies were works of collaboration, Lucas didn’t direct or write by himself, he had help. Something he clearly disregarded when it came to the prequels and he assumed absolute creative control and as it turns out Lucas can create huge, amazing, beautiful worlds, entire universes but he can’t write dialogue for shit. One of the lines that just kills me every time comes right at the end of Episode III, ‘Only a Sith deals in absolutes’ I mean come on, did absolutely no one even proof read the script or were they just too afraid of Lucas to mention how stunning retarded that sentence is .

So what can we take from this in regards to the new Star Wars flicks? Lucas isn’t even involved anymore. He sold it all off to Disney and appointed perhaps the most successful producer in Hollywood, Kathleen Kennedy to take his place. Who in turn appointed JJ Abrams to direct the first new movie. Now needless to say obviously Lucas will still be around but clearly he realises that it’s time for him to let go and allow someone else to take the reins.

With Lucas out of the way perhaps someone might finally realise the true potential of the franchise. The opening battle sequence over coruscant in Episode III serves as a reminder of how visually exciting and amazing the world of Star Wars can be, now introduce and truly compelling story and characters that we truly care about, that’s what a new Star Wars movie can be. And we know that JJ can create stunning action sequences in space, and we now he can take existing characters and bring out their full potential by thrusting them into an exciting and gripping adventure. This could be it; it could actually be a time when not just a good Star Wars movie comes along but potentially a great one.
