X-Men Days of Future Past – A Nerd Divided

So I just finished watching the footage from the X-Men DOFP Panel and I found myself at first really, really excited and impressed but also kind of annoyed at the same time. Let me explain:

I love the fact that they’re taking a seriously bold move, it’s something that this industry really needs more of. Arguably Marvel kicked off the trend with The Avengers which was really the boldest move in recent cinematic history and this is 100% a reaction to the success of that movie.

X-Men First Class is hands down my favourite of the X-Movies. It really invigorated the franchise for me and pretty much succeeded in accomplishing everything it set out to achieve, and it has Michael Fassbender in it and everyone knows Michael Fassbender makes everything 10x more awesome.

After that film I was sure we would never see the original cast on screen again, bar Hugh Jackman as Wolverine of course, so when they announced they were bringing together the 2 casts and resolving the 2 timelines I was stunned. It just doesn’t seem like something that would actually happen, it just sounds like an idea that people would talk about 10 years from now like ‘Hey wouldn’t it have been sooo cool if they did this?’ But here we are.

They have the perfect set up with the time travel story line, Bryan Singer is back on board as director. It’s the perfect storm. So why am I annoyed?

Quicksilver is going to be in Days of Future Past in 2014 played by Evan Peters.

Quicksilver is going to be in Avengers Age of Ultron in 2015 played by someone who is NOT Evan Peters.

I mean come on. You have soooo many characters already can’t you just letJoss Whedon have him? Would it really be so detrimental to your movie? I get it, I’m not really that naive to think this is remotely how things work but it just bugs the shit out of me.

It’s also due to the fact that I really do think that Fox and Sony should just drop this shit already and give all the characters back to Marvel. Like Now. RIGHT NOW. No joke. I think with Disney behind them now they have a real shot to get every single character back as soon as physically possible.

So I’m sure X-Men Days of Future Past will be a pretty amazing movie but it’s very existence is just a constant reminder that things just aren’t right in the world until every movie featuring a MARVEL character is produced by MARVEL STUDIOS.

Marvel News Overload

So let’s not bury the lead here this one is a biggie. Did not see this one coming. All I know about Ultron is that he’s a pretty badass robot created by Hank Pym (Antman) for some sort of experiment which goes wrong leading said robot to proceed to terminate the Avengers. So what’s going on with Thanos? Well Marvel head honcho Kevin Feige did previously drop hints that Thanos would be saved for the 3rd Avengers movie BUT we did also find out that Thanos will be appearing in the Guardians of the Galaxy. So there’s that to chew on aswell.

At the Marvel Panel they pretty much had some sizzle footage for all their upcoming Phase 2 movies: Guardians of the Galaxy, apparently shaping up to be the comedic action team up romp set among the stars that many had expected with James Gunn at the helm. Captain America: The Winter Soldier, featuring some footage of Cap going all Jason Bourne on some Shield operative in an elevator, Robert Redford dishing out some advice about the modern world and a nice reveal of the titular antagonist. And Thor: The Dark World which seemingly put an end to the previous speculation that Loki could have a possible redemption path….SPOILERS well unless chopping off Thors good hammer throwing hand counts as redemption then NO.

So not a lot of news news apart from the title reveal but still a lot to keep fans going until 2015 and all good stuff. Looks like Mavels winning streak is set to continue for quite some time.

Thor: The Dark World will be released 8th November 2013

Captain America: The Winter Solider will be released 4th April 2014

Guardians of The Galaxy will be released 1st of August 2014

Avengers: Age of Ultron will be released 1st of May 2015

Comic Con News Splurge!

Wow big day for geek news. First off one of my personal favourites, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes!

Totally psyched for this movie, I absolutely loved Rise and the premise of the sequel sounds like it’s going to be on another level of awesomeness. Set something like 10 years after the first movie the deadly simian virus has ravaged humanity and left only smalls pockets of rag-tag human resistance whilst the Apes have been thriving and developing their new civilization. Expecting some pretty intense battle sequences between Caesars army of Apes and the last dregs of the Human resistance. This will be epic

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is slated for release July 18th 2014. Directed by Matt Reeves (Cloverfield) and starring Gary Oldman (The Dark Knight Rises), Jason Clarke (Zero Dark Thrity) and of course Andy Serkis .

Superman/Batman team up movie

ImageYurp, it’s not even April Fools or nothing.

First things first I legit called this right before Man of Steel dropped. I swear on my mothers life.

In a discussion about how DCs cinematic gameplan would roll out to compete with the uber success of Marvel and the Avengers. Man of Steel being the first in the newly established shared universe made total sense but how they would progress was always going to be the real story. Could they really just copy the Marvel formula step for step. If not then how would they ever get to the eventual Justice League?

Well let’s see what the one biggest trump that DC has over Marvel? Hmm I dunno maybe the single most popular comic book character all of time?

The Batman reboot was inevitable and they really just didn’t have the luxury of time on their hands to have him just sit around and wait. But as an audience there’s really no way we’re about to sit through another standard origin story for the bat. They had to bring him into the universe but how do they do it so soon after the Nolanverse? Well this is how. World’s Finest movie.

Supes has been established in the world, we know Bruce Wayne is out there. All that’s left to be seen is at what stage in his Bat career is when he meets the big blue boy scout?

Now let’s just take a quick second to express some feels. UUUURRRGHRGH. Can. Not. Wait.

Honestly I’m probably more exicted about this than I would be about a Justice League movie. I lurv me some Batman and I like Supes a whole lot also and I really do think of all the comic book buddy cop scenarios Bruce and Clark has always been the most interesting.

Whilst I really didn’t think much of the Man of Steel, I can definitely see the potential for a truly epic DCU movie and really can’t think of much to make me squeal with nerd joy than seeing these 2 characters sharing the screen together.

And one more thing can we officially say now that 2015 will be the greatest year for nerd related movies ever? I mean come on.
